Sosnowski Home in Desert – Chen + Suchart Studio

A great example of innovative desert homes, this urban house in Tempe, Arizona, designed by architects Chen + Suchart Studio, illustrates the art of stacking styles, volumes and materials. The modern Sosnowski Residence in the Arizona desert features an earthy, neutral base with an ultra-modern industrial-style glass box that appears to hover overhead. Floor-to-ceiling panels of glass are held by a bold, black frame which makes the upper level really stand out against the sky. By night, a glowing, floating cube offers a peak at the cozy comforts inside. Interior architecture, like the exterior, is decidedly industrial in style, featuring brick walls, exposed ductwork and steel-paneled ceilings. Chen + Suchart Studio

Another Richard Meier White Beach House

A luxury design by architect Richard Meier and his partner Michael Palladino, this cool Southern California beach house is the epitome of cool. Fronting the Pacific Ocean to the south, a courtyard to the west and the Pacific Coast Highway to the north, this 4,280-sq.-ft. beach house follows in the tradition of SoCal’s courtyard houses that open to the outdoors. This light and airy design welcomes residents and guests into a two-storey glass-enclosed entry, leading into the garden, main oceanfront house and guest house. The two-storey foyer is bisected by a glass bridge and walkway, with the home living areas on either side. A modern, open-to-above living room opens to the deck overlooking the ocean. Floor-two-ceiling glass is shaded with sunscreens and louvers, providing privacy while maintaining a sense of openness to the outdoors. “The beams at the roof, located above the horizontal framing, express the structural rhythm and layering of components,” explains the architect. “This cadence is repeated with the joinery of the painted aluminum exterior wall panels and modular windows. The mass of the exterior plaster walls are juxtaposed to the transparent glazed facades, creating a mosaic of layered materials.” Richard Meier

Uber-Cool German Treehouse

If you thought you’ve outgrown your treehouse, guess again. Those who appreciate modern architecture with an unconventional twist will want to plan their next trip to North-West Germany, where you’ll find this contemporary treehouse perched between an alder and an oak in Osnabruck. Designed by architectural firm Baumraum, a company specializing in tree-top dwellings, the treehouse stands out with its curved roof and many windows. Although this modern home carries a totally sophisticated design, it still boasts those traditionally playful elements that make it a true treehouse – a rope ladder, plenty of outdoor deck space, and of course, nature-inspired interiors.

Natural Wood Home

The site for this small Sea Ranch house is edged with mature evergreen trees and opens to a meadow with views out to the Pacific Ocean.

Between the forest and the sea, Sea Ranch home is an uncomplicated beauty through and through. But the architects have pulled off minimalism with such flair that it’s what really sets this modern home apart. “The clients wanted an understated, flowing house that captured their love of Japanese simplicity” according to the architect. “Our solution starts with a vernacular barn form and carves away to shape an exterior octagonal deck that opens to the meadow and the view.” Made almost entirely of wood, this rustic ranch home features wide windows that welcome the breathtaking Pacific Ocean views. Natural light fills interiors, which boast ceilings finished in rich cedar with exposed beams, complemented by the cool, sheetrock walls, achieving the rural, minimalist appeal. The house on the meadow shows that there is a very quite and comfortable way to live.
